Was that durable?

Some of them were in service for 50 years (1926-76).


Edit: The railcar X2p 33 was in use even longer (1918-92). (A Picture found here.) It is currently being refurbished.


On swedish passenger cars teak panelling replaced steet steel from the 1900's to reduce maintenance costs. (Teak doesn't rust.) En example in the third picture.

However they were no good place to be in a train crash (and the older sheet steel covered cars with wooden structure was no better). Thus from the 1930's on, new cars where constructed entirely from steel including the complete structure. Wooden passenger cars could be found in service with SJ until mid 60's, with NSB until the 80's and by Roslagsbanan in Stockholm until 1992.
